Deterlings Establish Opportunity Scholarship
November 06, 2008
The four year scholarship will be awarded based on academic achievement, extra-curricular activities, financial need and attending the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.
Del graduated with two bachelor degrees, agriculture economics and agricultural journalism, and served as association editor for the Progressive Farmer Magazine. Del retired after 37 years with the magazine. In 1992 Del was named the Agriculture Editor of the Year and, in 2001, received the Outstanding Alumnus for the College of Agriculture and Life Science. He was also named Outstanding Former Student by the Department of Agriculture Economics.
Del commented, “We are committed to education. I came to Texas A&M in 1955 with little money. As a freshman I was awarded an Opportunity Award scholarship. If I had not received this award I would not have been able to attend college. This is an opportunity to give back and give to someone so they can get an education. It is a privilege to be able to do so.”
The Texas A&M Foundation helps former students, friends, corporations and other non-profit organizations direct contributions to specific academic and leadership programs. Its asset managers ensure that endowments like the Del and Lil Deterling Family Endowed Opportunity Award Scholarship retain or grow in value over time so that Aggies will benefit well into the future.
Donors may direct their gifts, large or small, to an existing scholarship fund or design and name their own scholarship. Scholarships can be set up as endowments, which are designed to provide funds in perpetuity. Donors may also choose to fund a non-endowed scholarship, in which the gift provides the scholarship stipend on a one-time basis.
