Alice and Erle Nye '59 Academic Center Dedication Set For Friday
The dedication ceremony will be 5 to 6 p.m. at the center location on the second floor of the Bright Football Complex.
Planners say the Nye Academic Center is equipped with state-of-the art technology designed to meet both the current and future needs of student athletes and is presently large enough for all 600 student athletes to use the facilities there at the same time.
The center has 29 tutoring rooms, a 50-station computer lab and a learning laboratory with six study carrels, computers and 15 small tables that each sit two students. In this lab, a learning specialist is able to work with student athletes one-on-one or in small groups. The center also has math and writing laboratories with similar design to the learning lab and two large classrooms that can be converted into four smaller rooms as needed.
Space has also been provided to meet the needs of the Nye Academic Center staff with individual offices for the director, assistant director, learning specialist, four advisors and others.
The center’s namesake, Erle Nye of Dallas, is chairman emeritus of TXU Corp. and is past chair of the Texas A&M University System Board of Regents. He served as a member of the board from 1997 to 2004.
Nye received a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Texas A&M in 1959, a juris doctorate from Southern Methodist University in 1965 and an honorary doctorate of science degree from the Baylor College of Dentistry in 1996.
During his time as a Texas A&M student, Nye was a member of the Corps of Cadets and was a Distinguished Military Graduate.
Nye is also a member of the Chancellor's Century Council, the Dwight Look College of Engineering Development Council, the One Spirit One Vision Campaign Executive Committee and the Texas A&M Foundation Development Advisory Committee.
In 1993, he received the Outstanding Alumni Honor Award from the Dwight Look College of Engineering and was inducted into the Corps of Cadets Hall of Honor in 2004.
